Natural High

My happy making song, the one I listen to when the world has me down, is "Here Comes The Sun" by the Beatles. It's amazing how something so simple as a small tune and the assurance that everything is "all right" can change my whole mood. Here are some more simple things that have the power to lift me up out of the doldrums.

*Smooth sheets and a warm bed
*The sun on my face
*Chamomile tea
*Reading a book aloud with the Airman
*Brilliant ideas for the weekend (more on that next post)

Secret, Hidden Lines

Spent the morning running around town and base. Think I might join a Knitting/Emboidery/Crocheting Club. I've always wanted to learn to do that stuff just never really had the nerve to try.

Anyways, what I really want to talk to you about is the Historical Museum I went to today. It is for the town I live in now, Valparaiso, and is chuck full of interesting pictures and old things. So much history. I don't often pause and think about the people that used to live here; what their lives were like, what they did for fun, if they struggled with the same things I do today (ie every Floridians greatest enemy: sand)

Walking through that little museum really reminded me of the fact that I'm not the center of the universe and I shouldn't live my life that way. Rather I should try to devote myself more to helping others, easing their pain, bringing them joy. I decided to start then and there by leaving an anonymous poem tucked away in a desk in the children's area. Hopefully someone will find it and it will brighten their day; I know it brightened mine.

Dish By Dish

This was a food weekend for me and the Airman. It seemed like every event worthy of note was centered around food in one way or another; if we weren't eating it we were talking about it, if we weren't talking about it we were being taught how to make it, if we weren't being taught how to make it we were watching it, and so on and so forth. So, in honor of all of you food focused out there like me, I'll tell you about my weekend, not day by day, but dish by dish.

1) Scrambled eggs with pan fried German sausage and a side of Ezekial toast smothered in grape jelly - The Airman and I had this for breakfast Saturday morning. This may sound like the old tried and true breakfast that everyone has had, blah blah, but it is the meat that makes this meal. A short description: It is one long sausage that you first boil and then slice up before you throw it into a pan. This is where the magic happens. Frying it in the skillet not only browns it but allows the, I kid you not, pockets of cheese in the meat to begin to melt and ooze all over the place. THIS IS HEAVEN and so should be treated with the proper respect; any leftover cheese must be mopped up with your toast, no exceptions.

2)Homemade Sushi Rolls - The Airman had an Asian friend of his over to teach us how to do this. As far as I can tell there are only Two rules when it comes to sushi making. (1.) Make sure you get the right rice, that would be sushi rice, says so right on the package. And (2.) make sure everything is as fresh as possible, especially the fish. I may live in Florida but there is no good fish markets close by, so the Airman and I played it safe with some vaccum sealed imitation lobster and it tasted great.

3) Chocolate and Butterscotch Spiked Rice Krispie Treats - This is my go to desert in a stitch because it is basically rice krispie treats with chocolate and butterscotch chips thrown in with the krispies. I made them for a movie night over at a friends house where we were watching "Julie and Julia". I had a good laugh at the part in the film where one lady says rather derisively, "marshmallow fluff! What is that?"

What I Sea With My Eyes

Things I'm noticing about my new home:

*It feels like part of the ocean. The water is the life blood of this place, its touch lingers on everything, even on dry land. Trees are covered in green moss like algae, their branches heavy with fungus so that looking up is like looking down into an ocean filled with coral. The puffy clouds across the blue sky are waves breaking in the heavens.

*When it rains the air becomes saturated with water. The humidity acts like a cheese cloth, slowly letting the water seep down even as more falls. There is no escape from the damp. The moistened air leaks into your house, collecting and running in rivulets down your window panes. Water seems to settle into your skin, making it sticky to the touch. If you were to wring your hands together fat drops would splash to the floor.

A New Start

It is time to start anew. I am sitting in my new house, in a new state, waiting for my new husband, and now I have a new blog (actually it's the old blog but I've deleted all my old posts and re-vamped it to the point that it's like new). I'm in that spring of new life mood, even though it's January; I'm finding Florida has that effect on me. Oh, how I wish I had a camera so I could show you all the beautiful green down here. Instead I'll just borrow a little bit from 3191

A small bit of spring from a lovely bouquet. Here's to wishing.
